NEURALINK- technology for the brain:-

In July of 2019, Elon Musk had a presentation detailing the Neural ink project where he states that human cognition has two major systems the Limbic System where our emotions, needs at once are processed and then the Cortex which involves thinking and planning. The Neural ink in its final form is to be the third layer on top of this digital super-intelligence layer augmenting ourselves with computers and eventually artificial intelligence depending on how you look at it.

We already have this layer in the form of our phones and laptops, you’ve all heard the saying that we have all of the world’s information at our fingertips the bottleneck and all of this is how we interface with that information. Fingers and speech are too slow and very low bandwidth form of communication between us and our devices. A much faster way to get this information would be direct, this is called the Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) and Neural ink is an effort to solve this problem. It’s already been a massive multidisciplinary effort it includes scientists, doctors, electrical engineers, surgeons and more.

HOW DOES NEURAL LINK- technology for brain WORK?

Understanding the Brain: There Are 86 Billion Neurons in Your Brain. Neurons send and receive information. Although neurons come in many different types, they generally have three parts: a dendrite that receives a signal, a cell body called a soma that computes the signal, and an axon that sends a signal out. The neurons of your brain connect to each other to send and receive signals through axon-dendrite connections called synapses.

Action potentials cause synapses to release neurotransmitters. These small molecules bind to receptors on dendrites, opening channels that cause current to flow across the neuron’s membrane. When a neuron receives the ‘right’ combination of spatiotemporal synaptic input, it initiates an action potential. We place electrodes near neurons in order to detect action potentials. Recording from many neurons allows us to decode the information represented by those cells. In the movement-related areas of the brain, for example, neurons represent intended movements. There are neurons in the brain that carry information about everything we see, feel, touch, or think.

Interfacing with the Brain:

We’re designing the first neural implant that will let you control a computer or mobile device anywhere you go. Micron-scale threads  insert into areas of the brain that control movement. Each thread contains many electrodes and connects them to an implant, the Link.

The Neural ink Chip:  The processor for making all of this work is something calls the n1 chip. The n1 chip reads analogue brain signals, amplifies them, digitizes them, processes them and sends them out to a pod device behind the ear. The pod device is the only thing that’s going to be upgraded and the implants stay as they are removed the pod and everything shuts off. The n1 chip is 4 by 5 millimetres low power and has build-in hardware for processing brain signals it can read 20, 000 brain samples per second so these are real raw signals coming from a Neural ink hooked up to a brain. It has majorly three parts –

  • LINK: Sealed, an implanted device that processes, stimulates, and transmits neural signals.
  • NEURAL THREADS: Each small and flexible thread contains many electrodes for detecting neural signals.
  • CHARGER: Compact inductive charger wirelessly connects to the implant to charge the battery from the outside.

Future Of Neural ink –
The future of Neural ink is prediction to be in 3 stages:

  • One: is to understand and treat brain disorders starting with people with serious medical needs.
  • Two: preserve and enhance one’s own brain.
  • Three: full brain-machine interfaces.

What Does Neural link-A technology for the brain Do?

As mentioned above, Neural Ink operates using encephalopathy. It can also be as a connection between the human brain and technology. This means that people with paralysis can easily operate their phones and computer directly with their brains. Its main purpose is to help people to communicate through text or voice messages. Of course, Neural ink is not limited to that, it can also be utilized to draw pictures, take photographs and do other activities.
